A loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend.

The date was August 7, 2001.  Time had just stood still.

That is the only way to describe how we received the news that our mother Barbara had passed.  Mom never once complained, never once gave us any glimpse of the pain she was in or of the effort it took to stay with us for as long as she did.  To all who knew her, she was our fighter, our champion, and she continuously beat down every medical challenge that she faced.

The news that she had finally lost was a blow to us all.

Mom was one of a kind. She was a devoted wife to her husband Robert for over 35 years, a mother of three boys, a grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin, friend, neighbor, and philanthropist.  Mom fought as hard as she did for all of us.  She wanted to be a part of all that we did and did not want to miss one single event in our lives, no matter how ordinary or how extraordinary.  If you are a family member or a friend, you no doubt have fond memories of Mom.  We all have our favorite stories.  To those new to our extended family, don’t hesitate to ask any of us to elaborate. You will soon see what a remarkable person Mom was. And just as Mom would have done, you too will become part of our family.

Mom touched everyone’s heart with her love and her desire to put everyone else before her own needs. She gave tirelessly of herself, and to those in need.  But on this date, the heart-related illnesses that she battled for five years were just too sever to manage.  Again and again, Mom had defied doctors and medical experts alike with her determination to live, her passion to fight, her need to stay with us all.  Mom continually gave us all second chances just to be a part of our lives.

It is in this spirit…fighting thru adversity, leaning on family and friends, displaying the heart of a champion, and giving second chances in life, that on this day, nearly ten years later, we have come together to build this Foundation in her honor.  In the end, Mom did not lose her fight.  In sharing moms legacy, we will educate, fight, and work hard in helping others just as she did for so many years.  Mom always gave of herself and we shall do the same.

The Barbara’s Heart Foundation will work tirelessly to help give those in life exactly what she gave us: a second chance.  This is for you mom.
